COLORED ARISTOCRACY B part 13 years 5 months ago #4172

Okay, In the B part, how do you keep the meleody straight ? I have tried to "map out" the 1st string 2's, but i still have trouble remembering the rythm. or fitting a roll pattern. I wnat to be accurate or faithful to the arrangement.

okay, i 'll reply to my own thread. (you get bonus points for that).. i think i have figured out a pattern that fits. ie. a couple of forward rolls, followed by a reverse, then a forward reverse roll usung the thumb in the reverse part. AT least that's the way i can do it for now. It's a little easier to remember the melody using that pattern.

Buzzart -

Colored Aristocracy is not a Scruggs style tune. It is a old time or clawhammer style tune. You need to learn a two finger roll on the banjo. Try to work on rolls that utilize the thumb and middle finger and then combine that with a three finger roll.

The "roll" for this works better for me if i DON'T anchor my pinky on the banjo head, but rather let my whole right hand work. Unlike classic clawhammer, I will still pick individual strings with my middle and index fingers. Mostly I strike down with my thumb on the melody quarter notes and work my hand up and down to get the 1-5 string eighth note fills. It's pretty close to the clawhammer "bum dit-ty" sound, but still uses regular picks.
