Soldier's Joy Questions 13 years 2 months ago #4917

A couple of questions about Soldier's joy tablature for banjo:

1) It says C tuning, key of C, but there are several different C tunings. To what should each string be tuned?

2) Even though it is in the key of C, the chords shown are D and A, which are not major chords in C. Is this in C or D?

If I've changed the tuning away from open G, how do I make a D or an A chord to play backup?

I hope posting lets me pick which song I play! Guess which one I'll choose...

Here are your answers:

1. For the banjo, the 4th string is lowered one tone to a C. The first string is left at D

2.The banjo would capo to the 2nd fret, so the chords would change from C,F and G to D, G and A

3.Focus on the bottom three string (Strings 1, 2 and 3) on the banjo. Since the 4th string is tuned down a tone, the chord structure also changes from your standard positions yet, the 1, 2 and 3rd strings remain the same as though you were in standard G tuning.

Hope this helps.

So it's really in the key of D, not C, but played as if in C capo'd up a whole tone (to D)?
