The Strings On The Five-String Banjo

When the Banjo is tuned correctly, the strings played open are as follows:

1st String:      D

2nd String:

3rd String:

4th String:

5th String:      G

It is important to remember that by going up 12 frets from each open string, you play all the natural notes, and the sharps and flats.  Once you reach the 12th fret, you start what is called a new “Octave”.  In other words, the notes on the 12th fret are the same as the open strings and the notes repeat from the 12th fret forward or higher up the neck.
