TOPIC: Rock & Blues Class - Week 2

Rock & Blues Class - Week 2 2 months 1 week ago #9309

Hello Everyone

We have held two classes of Rock & Blues. In this particular class, we have guitar, banjo and mandolin players So the focus is on all of these instruments.

In Week #1 we discussed the basic 12 bar blues pattern

In week #2, we went into greater detail of the musical alphabet and what a major scale is, in relation to 12 bar blues. I then illustrated how the major scale is used in chord progressions.

One common theme we addressed was the I, IV, V progression. In this particular class, I demonstrated the root notes for a I, IV, V progression using the particular tuning of each of the three instruments.

I also discussed the inlay and how it is used as a road map.

Questions:

What are these three instruments (Mandolin/Fiddle, Guitar, and Banjo) tuned to?

What is a major scale and how do we use the scale to derive a major chord progression?

What instrument has the most complicated scale structure and why?

The instruments can be compared to each other in regards to how they are tuned, What are some of the common strings found on each instrument ?

You should complete all of your scale templates at this time. Next, print out the song "Matchbox Blues" and be prepared to work on this in Week 3
