TOPIC: Recording

Re:Recording 15 years 7 months ago #96

Well believe it or not, I have had such a moment of evaualition by my wife. I did not think I have made any progress but as I was attempting to try the dueling banjo assignment from this week she told me she could tell it was beginning to sound like it should. Of course My timing is all over the place right now, but I am finding the strings and picking the right sounds better than a week ago. I think a just may hook up the tape recorder and see if I can make a little tape for comparison. Sounds like a good idea.

I just wanted to give this thread a "bump" and see if anyone else is recording themselves.

I don't mean to bring up matters of recording others or classes, just your own practice, so please, no flames.

I really think that as beginners we are so preoccupied with making our fingers work we put all of our concentration into operating the instrument, and not on listening to ourselves. I know I have a hard time hearing the melody notes imbedded inside banjo rolls, and playing at slow speeds only makes hearing melody notes harder for me. But once I started recording myself, I could hear more in the playback than I could in real time. That and the ability to alter the playback speed to make it sound more like the real thing, and other speeds between, have really helped me find the melody. Once you start to hear the melody, then you can start to work on the "dynamics", emphasizing the melody notes to stand out from the roll.

Who records? What do you use?

Cheers,
Chris
