TOPIC: Recording

Recording 15 years 6 months ago #16

I've been having fun lately recording my practice. Not that I'm so great to listen to, but I've found that listening to it helps me identify issues with timing (among other things).

I recently bought an audio interface that lets me interface a microphone or an electric instrument (guitar) into my computer (a Mac) to record directly into garage band. Garage Band is amazingly cool, and there are lots of other similar programs out there.

Garage band, like many other recording programs, will let you change tempo or pitch after recording. What this lets me do is to record a song at a slow tempo and play it back at pro speed. I recorded the opening break of Foggy Mountain Breakdown at 72 bpm, 4/4 time, key of G. When I played it back at 216 bpm, I was amazed at how much it sounded like the real thing. Sometimes playing something slow it's hard to hear the song you are familiar with. This was really encouraging.

Does anyone else try any home recording? Let me know how you do it and what you try to accomplish by it.

The recording of playing sounds like a great idea. I have a recording program left over from my radio broadcasting days that would do just what you are talking about. But right now I am so new at playing I would not consider recording anything yet. Maybe in a few months I might have the nerve.

I would like to hear other thoughts on those who have recording experience (whether it is small portable recorder or otherwise). I have researched this matter in detail and agree that garage band has so much to offer. To take it a step further, if you are an apple user you can you Apple Pro Logic Studio or Logic Express. Non Apple Users gravitate to ProTools or another software package. If you saw what Pro Logic could do, you would be impressed. it take Garage Band much much further.

I have listed some recommended products in the Store. If anyone has questions about them, feel free to ask.

You may not realize it, but now is when you should record.

Having a week by week or month by month archive will help you when you feel you are not making progress. You may not hear your progress day to day. But go back and listen to yourself from a few months ago, and you'll see how far you've come.

You don't have to share the recordings with anyone, but I really believe they can help.

I have to agree. I received a Micro BR recorder last year and really thought it would be cool to record my own music. Then I laid down a few tracks and listened. Not Cool. I had to listen to every mistake I was making. And let me tell you there were quite a few. But..... practice, practice, practice and now I can really hear the improvement.

Espian -

Just imagine having your class sessions recorded in video. You will learn quite a bit from the video tape (which doesn't lie).
