I had a chance to talk to my nephew the other day about banjo playing and progress. He is pretty accomplished in lots of area and even played the golf mini tour for a while. Anyway, he mentioned a book by George Leonard, Mastery: The keys to Success and Long Term Fufillment. Essentially he said that he came away with............
1. Get a good instructor/Mentor (aka Dave)
2. Appreciate practice and love it for what it does and the process itself. Like Dave says.....slow, deliberate, without mistakes, methodical.
3. Appreciate plateaus, they only happen after you learn. They are the precursor to another jump
4. Try to be on the edge, challenge yourself and take chances.
5. Be open minded to learning. Always more to learn, never think it stops.
6. Do everything with attention and purpose.
I think this is good stuff to keep us going. The book is on the web at:

Hope this helps. Karma greatfully accepted.
