TOPIC: Performance Key?

Performance Key? 14 years 3 weeks ago #3091

There is usually some confusion concerning the correct key for group performance when there is a mandolin player in the specific group. Fretmentor sometimes has written the music (breaks) for specific instruments in different keys. That's not abnormal and should be considered a music sanity check. My general advice to the guitar and banjo players is --- when in doubt -- ask the mandolin player. Guitar and banjo players can easily capo to the correct key, but with the mandolin (there are mandolin capos!)if you have to capo up the fingering gets difficult since the fret distance starts getting microscopic.

Based on Fretmentor mando breaks, I put together and handed out a "cheat sheet" of keys for the Bluegrass class songs for mando players. That way, mando players can confirm the key for a performance group Unfortunately, I can't seem to find my copy, but one song indicates the incorrect key. My challenge to mando players is -- which song is it?

Does a fiddler trump a mandolin player?

As far as I know, fiddles do not have capos.

Correct Tigerpaws - and as your prize you win a chiropractic adjustment of your fretting hand;needed due to damage done by practicing mandolin!

Mompodell - I don't think there is a fiddle capo, but if you got the money we have the technology to produce one.

If i learn my tune in G, i just automatically capo up a step. I believe the same rule exists for fiddles, mompodell can verify. You're right, i just ask to be nice.
What gets confusing is when the tune is in G, and the mando player tells me NOT to capo. Thankfully, capos are rather flexible.

The capo is my friend, it might save my life one day. Everyone should have such a friend. ;-)
