In St Mary's County, Maryland, 1960s and 70s, tempo never meant much! We "learned" that whomever plays the solo, "leads". No matter what! And I think it mostly was so the soloist would not look bad, nor become embarrassed - often it was difficult to find someone to solo in the first place! At the time it ticked me off. After awhile it became natural to "follow". I will say now, though, it is darned refreshing to have a standard!
