TOPIC: A question for all

Re:A question for all 15 years 1 day ago #909

I'll tell you this...often times, an hour isn't enough. 10-15 minutes warming up playing scales, 10-15 min. playing chord progressions to work on smoother chord changes, 10-15 min. going over familiar tunes, 10-15 min on our new tunes. If i have extra time, i'll try a new Top-40 or rock song. Currently i'm trying Bon Jovi's "Wanted: Dead or Alive". Just the intro alone is a fun challenge. Moving arpeggio dyads under a D-string drone, starting at the 14th fret, and going down to the 1st. My roofer, who is a guitarist, played this song on my instrument, and it sounded good. Would sound better if it was played on a 12 string, like the original. The challenge is walking the fretboard smoothly without breaks to keep the intro continuous. For fingerpicking, i'm working on Dave's tabbed out Kansas song, "Dust in the Wind". I'm still practicing the finger roll, it's a fast song.

Not nearly enough! I did get to play after work today for a couple hours. Devoted most of it to Bluegrass. I went through every song. I really tried to concentrate on hitting every string of each chord throughout the rythem parts. I think it made a difference. It was slower but it sounded alot better. To me anyway. I'm really looking forward to doing that again.

I try to get in at least 2 to 3 hours of practice each day, sometimes more or less, have to give my fingers a rest in between.

Right now I practice at least 2to3hr a day, between Theory, scale work, major and minor scales, about twenty song I'm trying to learn, bluegrass lick and blues riff I'm starting to run out of time [ have to work and all that normal life stuff]. My question is, does anyone have any suggestion on how to divide my time.Should I split days up and do songs one day, riffs another and scales another ? Any suggestions will be helpful.

Tigerpaws - Loved your answer to the practice time problem! Simple but true. Music is great and takes up alot of time - but working for a company, corporation, etc. even at it best was miserable.
